Muntenië

Muntenia is a historical region of Romania, part of Wallachia, situated between the Danube, the Carpathian Mountains and Moldavia, and the Olt River. The Olt River is the border between Muntenia and Oltenia.

Muntenia has a rich history. Muntenia was inhabited by the Dacians before being conquered by the Roman Empire in 2nd century CE. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Muntenia was ruled by groups including the Goths, Huns, Avars, and Slavs. In the 14th century, Muntenia became part of Wallachia. At that time Wallachia was a vassal state of the Ottoman Empire. In 1859 Wallachia and Moldavia united to form what would become Romania.

Muntenia is known for its folklore: music, dance, storytelling, etc. The traditional music in Muntenia uses instruments such as the cobza, tambal, and fluier. The region is also known for its traditional dances. On top of this Muntenia has a rich culinary tradition with a variety of unique dishes: sarmale, mici, tochitura, etc.

Muntenia consists of ten actual counties: Brăila, Buzău, Călărași, Argeș, Dâmbovița, Giurgiu, Ialomița, Ilfov, Prahova. Muntenia has also parts of: Teleorman, Vrancea, Vâlcea, Olt. Romania's capital city is also part of Muntenia.
